I'm persian ;), so i might be able to answer your question. An Iranian is the word associated to the civilization of the Islamic Republic of Iran after the revolution in 1979. Persians are the traditional and oldest term used to associate someone that is from Persia/Iran. Essentially they mean the same thing, but some people consider themselves Persians and not Iranians because the term Iranian came after the establishment of the Islamic regime, and some people really hate the current government over there.... me being one of the many.

It's kind of like the difference between an American an their Irish or English ancestors. We are no longer English or Irish. Many Iranians have Persian ethnicity, but it is not pure, and Persia no longer exists, plus, there are many groups of people who are descendants of the Persians.

It is the same country. Iran is the cultural representation of the kingdom come, whereas Persia is the regional symbol of Eden Garden.
