I really need solid material on this. On wikipedia it says that Pokemon came out before Digimon in Japan. However if you search google and type "digimon before pokemon" you see tons of people that all agree that the Digimon video games were out before Pokemon was invented. So in other words Digimon came first. Yet the dates don't match meaning Pokemon came first. I need SPECIFIC sources. Not just yourself that tells me which came which, I also need specific dates as to which one came first. And where did Monster Rancher fit in all this? Was Monster Rancher the actual first one?

Well Digimon really did come first. They started out as a toy similar to Tamagotchi.

Anime-wise, Pokemon was first. But, a handheld game by a different name but inspired Digimon was created first. Look Digimon up on Wikipedia. Monster Rancher doesn't really fit into this, I'm pretty sure it was last.

Tamagotchi -> Pocket Monster -> Digital Monster
It's common knowledge.
The popularity Bandai's Tamagotchi lead to the creation of Nintendo's Pocket Monster, which lead to the creation of Bandai's Digital Monster which was based on Bandai's Tamagotchi.
You can check it with sources that contained Bandai and Nintendo information. Why not try their official websites?
The first Digimon movie is "Digimon Adventure", which premiered in early 1999 (around March, I think), with its TV series that is also named "Digimon Adventure" premiered shortly after it.
The first "Pocket Monster" TV series, I think it premiered before the first Digimon movie.
Monster Farm?
Well, I don't know much, but the anime TV series once showed a Sony PlayStation (originial one) or something similiar. So either it's pre-Sony PlayStation 2's popularity or they just like putting in old video game console.

Pokemon was created around 1995.
Digimon was created in 1997.
As for the Monster Rancher, it was said that the show (t.v.) was made in 1999. I don't know when it was created.

monster rancher actually came first, it was a playstation game came out in 1997,.the pokemon games came out in 1997, and digimon didn't come out until 1999. i went to imdb.com and typed in all three, monster farm ( rancher) and pocket monsters ( pokemon) came out the same year and digimon didn't come out until 2 years later
