I have used Top Fin but hate it for some reason. It just looks bad. I was wondering what goo brands of gravel are, and that are cheap but good quality. Also, is pool filter sand hard to maintain?

The brand really does not matter. Just find a kind that is the size/color you like.

You don't necessarily need to use aquarium gravel. Landscape gravel is very cheap and you get a big 50 pound bag. You also can use play sand. Just make sure you wash these really well because they are covered in dirt. I use the garden hose and a mesh strainer.

Another alternative is pool filter sand. I have nevre used it, but I know people who do, and it looks really great. Gives a good natural look, and only only cost a couple bucks for a big bag of it.

Sand is not hard to maintain. Just make sure you stir up the sand before you do your weekly water change to get out all the waste. Then do your gravel vac and just pick the stuff off the top and you are good to go.

To the below person:
That is why regular tank maintenance is important. Every tank should be cleaned once a week, as long as you do that, there will be no problems.

relies upon a great deal on what variety of fish/animal you have in it, how many, how super the tank is, what variety of clear out, and extra. maximum folk propose gravel because of the fact that is yet another place for sturdy micro organism to enhance. some fish want sand to dig in, so substrate is a might desire to. on the different hand, in case you have something fairly messy, alongside with a turtle, or a style of fish wide-spread for eating gravel, then gravel is a no-no. no remember what you nevertheless might desire to vacuum the backside of the tank, in spite of if there is not any gravel gunk will visit the backside. I want gravel in fish tanks because of the fact in my opinion i think of it seems extra effective.

Be careful with really fine sands, they can pack down and turn anerobic( low oxygen) and harbor bacteria that release toxins into the tank. PeeTee
