Do NOT self-publish unless you can't publish it elsewhere -- most major publishers want to see your work in manuscript form, not already published. I second the recommendation of The Writer's Market from Writers Digest publishing--it will be available in the reference section of most public libraries, and is updated every year. Some major publishers have websites with submission information, like TOR:

Start with the publisher that releases your favorite books (so you can mention that in your query letter) and go from there.

Good luck!

You could attend a science fiction convention with a writers track that will have that information. Or you could look at Writers Digest and see the submission standards and who is accepting.

Be aware that most publishers prefer that you have published a few short stories in magazines first so that you have a track record. What many authors have done is take a chapter or two and make it into a short story to sell to a magazine like Analog and then you have people interested in buying the book.

Self publish it and send it out to publishers after it has been greatly edited and polished. www.lulu.com is affordable. You design your own covers etc and print1-100,000 copies. I'd start with about 20 and send them out to critics, get a review and then send the book with the positive review to a publisher.

Good Luck
