Strictly from watching movies and TV shows of several generations, psychologists are usually shown as not caring at all what the traumatized client has to say. They ask questions like "And how did that make you feel?" to feign interest, when in reality, they simply want their $200+ an hour paid so that they can play golf. In real life, the 4 psychologists I know make me feel slightly uneasy through no fault of their own, really. Since I know their career, I feel like my actions and words are being analyzed, constantly. A few of us are slightly put off when they seem to like to voice their opinion of why we do certain things. Those are the only stigmas I can think of.

No idea!I studied it myself although I decided to be a fashion designer instead...People think that the people who studied psychology see more inside the others but it's not true, they just know how to find out where someones problem is and how to solve it(I know pretty well to explain people's dreams...so yahoo answers lets me use my psychology...:-).Psychologist is a job like any other, for some reason I was just into something more creative...And to be true,I am and I look too crazy to sit in some office and to listen to people talking to me the whole day...

Some common stigmas:

When a person meets a Psychologist they presume that the Psychologist is analysing them.

That Psychology is just common-sense and that everyone is a Psychologist really.

That Psychologists are Psychiatrists (we are not, its a different job).

That Psychologists will attribute mental illness to them (only if you are mentally ill)!

That Psychologists are completely sorted themselves (no way, we have issues too).

"Why are You asking Me this question" syndrome. We are all sane, rational, normal sentient beings. Some of us are just more so, that's all. No body really thinks that someone else has the right to make pronouncements about then without first getting all the facts right. Psychologists have a history of getting things wrong or of using too many generalizations and too few insights. My wife was a Psychologist and she became so cynical and blase that eventually she was more of a hypocrite than hyper critical. Psychologists are perceived to be quidnuncs rather than social scientists.
