Cheryl.......
My Dad got me started watching wrestling on TV in the late 1950's and early 1960's.....when they broadcast live from Sunnyside Gardens in Queens, NY and from the Capitol Arena in Washington DC...on Saturdays. We'd watch it on a tiny black and white TV with lousy reception and we'd all cheer the heros and boo the villains. I can still remember my Grandma who would never even think of swearing.....getting so excited she blurted out..."LOOK!! Look at that son of a bi*ch...what he's doing"!!"...as the bad guy was using a "foreign object" and beating up the hero. HAHAHA....Grandma's blood pressure must have been 250/200......but she loved it! We all did back then.
Times were different.
Was wrestling fake?......You be smart never to try telling Grandma that. HAHAHA
Killer Kowalski....Haystacks Calhoun..."Nature Boy" Buddy Rodgers...Gorilla Monsoon...Antonina Rocca....Arnold Skaaland....."Classy" Freddy Blassie...Lou Albano...Tony Altimore...Bruno Sammartino..."Argentina" Apollo....Bobo Brazil...."The Fabulous" Moolah......wow,.....what memories.
Yeah, I still watch it once in awhile. I started watching when Vince McMahon's father ran the league....and then Vince Jr. started as a ring announcer....just a skinny kid...hahaha
It sure has changed....years ago you'd see one match with a 30 minute time limit.......or a "2 out of 3 falls" match...where you'd have to win 2 out of 3 matches to win. Imagine one wrestler getting a hold on another and them lying on the mat for 15 minutes......yeah, it got a little boring sometimes.
In the 70's and 80's I'd go to the matches at Madison Square Garden every month....I saw "Hulk Hogan" in his debut match at the Garden...and Andre the Giant...Bob Backlund... George "the Animal" Steele...Ivan Putski..."Rowdy" Roddy Piper...."Chief" Jay Strongbow..."Superfly" Jimmy Snuka..."Sergeant" Slaughter..."The Iron Sheik"...Jesse Ventura.."The Junkyard Dog"...."Baron" Mikel Scicluna....and I was at Shea Stadium in 1976 to watch the "wrestler vs boxer" match on the screen with Muhammad Ali versus Antonio Inoki live from Japan and LIVE in Shea was e HUGE match.....Andre the Giant versus a boxer..."The Bayonne Bleeder" Chuck Wepner.......and so many others...so many great memories.
Legend has it that Sylvester Stallone saw that match also (Andre vs Wepner) and THAT is what he based his character of "Rocky" on.
So...yep...I plead guilty to STILL being a fan, for close to 50 years now. what about you?
