The job of the referee is a big one. Not only do they do the simple things like count the falls and ringouts etc, but it is their job to make the heel look bad and the face look good. They can also communicate a lot of information from one guy to the other (ie if there is an injury, or what move the other guy wants to do next). Timekeeping is another part of it as well. I have never worked for the WWE so I don't have any first hand knowledge of the earpiece.

The main role of the referee is to declare a winner. If it's a traditional 3 count match the ref makes the 3 count. If it's a battle royal, the ref watches for both feet to hit the ground. Also, they insure no rules are broken when rules are actually enforced. Of course they are part of the script.

The REAL role is to make the three count, to keep time of the wrestlers when they went out of the ring, and to decide who wins or looses. And they are also part of the script.

Back when Wrestling was Professional Wrestling, the Referee's were actually State Officials, now they are employees of WWE.

Yes they are. Cause whenever they get hit, they pretend to really get hurt when it is just a little measly attack.
