The gift of life..."eternal life" When a person, with a repentant heart asks Jesus into his life, and means it with his heart, he becomes a new creature. The things he used to do he no longer has a desire to do. If he begins to read Gods Word then he will grow in his faith, which helps him to continue in his new walk in this life without those old things he used to do.
When a person comes to the end of this life, which is death, he steps into eternity. Yes, whether we "believe it or not" we will spend eternity somewhere. Just as an acorn has to die before it becomes an oak tree, so must we die on this earth to live again. So, as a new creature in Christ, we have the assurance of eternal life in heaven.
I know, for I used to be just like those people you asked about.

good question. life is a gift. a very precious one at that, but because some people don't know the One who gave us life to begin with, causes them to feel as if they have to cover up their feelings and emotions with excessive drinking, etc..

I don't mean to sound jaded, but the truth is for those kinds of people life is one of those unwanted gifts, and for some who are well aware of what their doing, its just expendable.

well I think that people who suffer from depression or have low self esteem issues and are insecure often tend to sabotage themselves. Being happy scares them so they subconsciously do things to sabotage themselves. Really it's all about self hatred.

They are trying to fill a void that only God can fill with things that have no possible way of filling that void.
