She wrote blank and free verse but was more famous for her Shakesperean and Petrarchan style sonnets.

Emily Dickinson seemed to be a sensitive individual considering the research suggesting she had experienced unrequited love, and how hurt she was by a neighbor's/sister-in-law's? actions. She was also very private about her writing having had only a handful of poems published in her lifetime. The meter of her writing often reflects that of church hymns. Thus suggesting a religious devotion whether for a specific religion or for the God she so praised in her writing. It seems that she held nature in such high regard, I've felt that she may even feel God in its existence. She was fond of neighborhood children, sending a basket of muffins to them as they played in a nearby yard. It is possible that she suffered from Bright's Disease which involves the kidneys, thus her choice of white clothes. A color that would make her feel more sanitary...perhaps....and this condition might have also made her a recluse since venturing forth might mean uncomfortable or embarrassing situations.

I believe she wrote mostly free verse on subjects that were dark and dealing with death. She is a great poet, though. I like the poem Because I Could Not Stop for Death. Check it out at the site i listed.

There is no frigate like a book to take us lands away
Nor any courses like a page of prancing poetry
This traverse may the poorest take without oppress of toil
How frugal is the chariot that bares the human soul
