I don't think that as a nation we are divided. We are just individual. We will always have differences of opinion and different life references. Some people hope optimistically like "Sara"; others see a little pessimistically, like "karen v". Some people think before they talk, like "andy" and "Answerman". Others react divisively, like "polaris", giving the impression of a divided nation. But we live shoulder-to-shoulder with our differences and enjoy a freedom that actually makes us a unique and rather amazing UNDIVIDED nation. We came to where we are through hundreds of years of growth as a nation - TOGETHER. NOT as a result of any historical documents, decrees or any blueprint. We ought not think that we can simply apply our blueprint to any other people and it will stick, because "we know it to be best". Our evolution as a country will never be copied by another land any more than our fingerprints will. I can only try to not take for granted that which I have, WE have,..right here.

right after 9/11 the president held a 80 % approval rating, and he held it up until he invaded Iraq. It begin to drop at that time and now is around 30%, I feel the war in Iraq has divided the nation and I see a flashback to Vietnam war. The times are similar. Even the wars are similar, I think the only way to unite the country is to totally change direction, we need to bring our people out of that hell hole and bring them home alive to their family's. Even then there will be much displeasure directed at George Bush, from both sides, the ones that want us to stay and the ones that want us to leave. I guess in answer to your question the war is the divider and to end it would be the uniter.

I hate to say this, but there is nothing that will cause this nation to come together in the near future. Even the attack on our soil did not bring us together like it did in the past. There are too many people that believe that if they have one sided conversations with dictators that they could change their minds. Look at what the UN tried to do for 12 years between the first Gulf War and the current conflict in Iraq. It is sad that people in the United States deny things like Saddam Hussein firing SCUD missiles at the start of the current conflict which was on his banned list.

I'm afraid it will take several more attacks with millions of Americans dead. Even then, it won't take long for the liberals to blame the USA for the carnage.
