Not enough! Archaeology is a science for people who enjoy archaeology, not for people who want to make vast amounts of money. Just ask Your professor.

not sure where these people are getting the figures from. no archaeologist straight out of school is making 49,000. likewise, no professor teaching archaeology is making 80,000. the most basic archaeological paying job is called an archaeological technician which pays between 10-15 dollars an hour depending on the company. this job is only a temporary, seasonal job lasting a few weeks to a few months. professors make about 40,000 starting out though i would imagine it does depend on the university.

If you work for private businesses just starting out, you can get anywhere from $9 an hour in popular areas (everyone wants to work in the Southwest, so they don't have to pay very well) to $17 an hour or more for a government job. Most seem to fall around $11-$14 an hour. You'd also get per diem for most jobs, and that averages around $25 per work day, but sometimes it's much higher, depending on job, area, and whether they provide housing. If you have lots of experience or a graduate degree, you can make more working as a boss person, but I don't know how much exactly.

It varies on whether the archaeologist is sponsored, or hired, or is just working for her/himself. My mother teaches the subject and makes about $80,000 a year...not a bad amount but shes not exactly driving a 2006 convertible. You have to love your job no matter what you make to be happy.
