My account password was changed and so my my husbands account. Does Yahoo research the IP addresses to find out who is responsible for doing these things. It had taken weeks to fix this and I have lost a great deal of personal info

There's no way for Yahoo to even attempt to track that down. So many accounts are hacked that they'd have to hire several thousand investigators to even attempt that. Not likely on a freebie service!

You defend yourself against that by keeping your password to yourself, using complex passwords, using bogus secrets, never clicking on links in IM sessions or e-mails, and changing your password and secrets often.

Your computer may be compromised, you need to do a full virus/malware check.
The important question is HOW did your password get compromised ?
If your computer has been compromised then expect to lose other passwords too - possibly that of your bank account.
Otherwise you either chose a weak password for yahoo or you TOLD SOMEONE your password or you wrote it down and someone saw it or even someone looked over your shoulder while you typed it in sometime or your comp is 'remembering' you for yahoo and someone had access to your comp while you weren't there. If 'significant' others, children etc have access then same for them.
If you have important information online then you should not only be mindfull of security, you should keep copies of important info on your own computer.

I had a similar problem with Yahoo and eventually it got taken care of. Here's their phone # if it helps. 1-800-699-2466. A "customer service" girl will answer. You've got to get past her, demand that you want or/need to talk with a supervisor! Be Very firm! Also ask for a follow-up (what are they going to do, they must let you know...soon...tomorrow!). ==================BY THE WAY=========MAYBE YOU HAVE A VIRUS, TROJAN, OR MALWARE THAT HAS A KEYLOGGER IN IT, TRACING YOUR KEYSTROKES!!!!! I mean it runs invisibly, recording keystrokes, capture screenshots, sees what credit card numbers you type, addresses, if you type your social number, etc.!======================
