if u wanna change the bg color to white then i suggest to u that your header color to change to dark blue, the 'Books 4 Sale' font color to yellow, your top navigation buttons to light blue and when u mouse over make it has the effect of outer shadow, so that user can knw that your buttons are functioning. this you can do it with js codes. do css document to set your font size, family-font and weight. the intro of your webpage u can change to white color background and can you please resize your 'Some Books To Consider' font size and perhaps you can change the background color to red or brown color? make the different between the book's name and the details clearly - used color to differentiate it. and certainly, the footer navigation background will be same as your header color and please code your a:link, a:hover, a:visited in your css to let your user know about the links.
color code is best if you code it using '#aabbcc' type rather than 'blue, yellow, dark blue'. if you are using dreamweaver or frontpage, set your color to webcolors, and whenever you code for your website color, it'll appear for you the correct webcolors which is compatible and usable for all web browser.

for books you may want to try the color #DDC3B1 but as a gradient, getting lighter as you go down the page, and then float those curvy somethings on that. change their color to a slightly lighter shade than the background. too much contrast like you have there sucks. white is not a cool background for such a site as yours. check out http://www.vatican.va/ the brown gives it a certain mature respectable look....books dude

how about having a cool backround picture, and keep the tables a solid color or maybe 50% transparent, the text to match up with the backround of the tables as opposite or white or black, have the tab links at the top stand out so people can read them easier like.. white and blue or white and black. white being the basic backround color.

So a dismal brown/caramel/no longer undeniable? um...properly what you have asked for merely sounds like a dismal browny caramel looking coloration. it extremely is sorta undeniable and boring, so i won't be in a position to truly provide help to there. in case you want to knock off a number of your expectancies in this coloration knocked off i could propose bronde :) Its lighter yet oh so particularly. xx

If I were you, I would just make the background lighter gray. Also. brighten up the text on the top of the page, it is not that visible.
