The only thing worse than a Tax-and-Spend Liberal is a Don't-Tax-and-Spend-Anyway Republican. While we've had some deficit spending under every President since Kennedy, the Republicans have presided over the biggest debt sprees. Bush Jr is himself responsible for more than doubling the Federal debt.
The biggest issue today, though, is not the deficit (the amount of shortfall we have in a given year) but the total debt (the total amount of money we owe, accumulated over the past 50 years). We owe almost 9 trillion dollars in total debt, which is about FIVE YEAR'S worth of our annual revenue. So, for all of you who want an easy way of looking at this, take your total annual income, multiply it by five, then image you had a credit card with that big a balance.
How long would it take you to pay it off?

The hallways of Washington are red in ink. They are addicted to spending. Short term debt spending is ok. Long term, balance needs to be maintained. It is Vital to this nations security that balance be maintained. During WW2, deficits did not mean anything. The nation's survival was at stake. Today, the nation's survival is also at stake --- the nation's economic survival. I propose a spending cut of 5% across the board with no exceptions and a freeze at those levels for 5 years. With a $12 trillion economy, this would mean savings of $600 billion right off the bat. This would balance the current budget and even provide a slight surplus. With that surplus, I would apply it to the national debt. I would also ask for an Amendment to the Constitution that states that , except in time of war, the national budget will be restricted to 99.99% plus inflation of the national revenue of the previous year. If the inflation rate is 3% in the previous year, then spending woudl be capped at (99.99+3)=102.99% or the previous year's revenue. This shoudl provide for a continuous budget surplus of .01% every year. This does not sound like much, but in a $12 trillion budget .01% is $120, 000, 000 which woudl be applied to the principle on our national debt every year. In years where revenue increased more than the previous year's, then even more woudl be applied to paying down the national debt. We must pay down the national debt. We can do it. 5% is not too much to ask. Incidentally, I am an Independant and not either a Republican or a Democrat.

Actually, if you study history that so many people think is useless you will know that it doesn't matter what the party in power has been called, we have almost always had deficit spending since the start. I am stretching my memory, but there has been very few times that our nation has been totally debt free. Today we are still not has bad versus gross domestic product than we have been in the past.
