Generally the answer would be 4, but it also depends on what types of units the numerical values are representing. If you are adding 2 gallons of water and 2 gallons of alcohol, it's not going to make 2 gallons of liquid due to the molecular structures of both. The alcohol molecules are much smaller than the water molecules, and so they would fit themselves together in a similiar way as if you mixed a gallon of large marbles with a gallon of small marbles. Thus, 2 plus 2 does not always equal 4.
