All other holidays are just that single day, Happy Valentines, Happy Easter, Happy Flag Day etc. . New years is a single day but it also represents an entire year, but the whole year is not new at some point, say by mid-february.

Since we say Happy New 'YEAR' it ofcourse means the whole year. But we say this on the very first day of the year because one day after, we wait for the new year that means the next year.
