You don't have to but you have the option of cutting any reptiles nails just don't cut too much or it could turn out bad. A lot of pet shops or vets will do it for free, and if not it is pretty cheap if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself.

Long foreclaws in Red-ear sliders is a sign it is a male. It will use these claws as part of the courtship ritual, and MAY use them against a rival male if the tank is too crowded.
There is no real need to cut them, and if it DOES use them aggressively you should try fo a bigger tank.

I would not cut a RES nails, for one thing, the length of nails helps determine their gender. (If you have cut their nails and then need to know the males from the females, it would be difficult, Not impossible though, their tails also give them away). Also, the nails will wear down naturally if you have bricks and other course items for them to crawl on.

Why? Does it hurt when he jumps up on you and licks your face? No cut nails!!! Nails will wear down with use. A turtle will only resent you for it.

NO! The males need their nails to help with food tearing and to attract females. Please check out my site as well. It's about the care of RESs. www.geocities.com/radiofemme/turtles
