He worked full time up until the day before surgery. He still has a lot of pain walking and his recovery is slower than he expected. It has been 3 weeks.

I am now 34. I was out of work for nearly two years. I had a dislocated shoulder that needed replacement.
Due to bad healthcare I didn't get the surgery for 6 months after my accident. It took another year and a half to recover to the point of being able to return to work.
I had no disability and couldn't work due to the pain and dysfunction.
I got married shortly after my accident.
Depression was deep due to not being able to work and having all the pain.

Reassure him constantly that you love him, get massage therapy and keep him occupied. Counseling is also a good idea for both of you.

I have just gotten back to work last September and that seemed to cure the depression.

I am a massage therapist, a lot of his pain can be alleviated through massage (both professional massage and self care). This will also lend itself to helping with the depression. Good luck.

His recovery will likely take a long time. I had a simple knee surgey and it took a year. I was in good shape, did my PT, and slowly got back to routine. But total recovery was at least a year. Once he starts getting back into things, he'll probably feel less depressed. Even though we might not say, most guys, even us more traditional guys need to feel needed and wanted. So do that.

He is lucky. I went into the hospital for a simple knee procedure and I got a very serious infection that almost killed me. I spent four months in the hospital and had 7 operations. They had to totally replace my knee and the infection ate away almost half of my spine. I had 4 spinal operations and they had to take one of my ribs to rebuild my spine. After four months in the hospital, I was released to my wife's care. I had to learn how to walk as four months on your back causes all of your muscles to shutdown. After four more months, I was able to walk with the help of a cane. I also discovered that because of all of the spinal operations I had, I shrunk 3 inches in height. It took me almost a year to recover from the infection and I still have pain 24/7. Tell your husband to quit feeling sorry for himself and start getting his body back in shape. I almost died, but I never gave up and my wife was a constant strength in my recovery. Have him e-mail me if he would like more details of what pain really was like.

nothin much you can do about the pain, but you can cheer him up, cook him some nice dinners?, get him some movies to watch while you are working. basically do things that will make him happy and to remind him that you care. keep his morale up and dont let it go down!

when i was in a motorcycle accident, i was so depressed and i dont know how i would have gotten through it without my girlfriend doing those little things.
