American Troops went over to Iraq to stop all the pain and chaos, but either there is still the killings going on, or they are killing just because of Americans being there? Was it like that before we ever went over there?

When foreign occupiers sweep into another country with the flimsy pretense that they are there to quell the suffering of the indigenous people, violence is to be expected. Paul Bremer, a Bush friend who had absolutely no business being in charge of the Coalition Provisional Authority, tore away the last chance Iraq had of a somewhat peaceful transition to new leadership.
Things have spiraled out of control from the beginning of the invasion. The Western powers want it to stay that way. Many people have heavy stakes in Iraq and are willing to continue the chaos.
In 2005, two British SAS commandos were arrested by Iraqi police in a predominately Shi'ite area. The SAS commandos were dressed as Arabs in car loaded with C-4 explosives and various small arms. At a time when sectarian violence was a daily event, these guys were apparently continuing to carry out these attacks by disguising themselves as Arab terrorists to keep the situation inflamed.
Things in Iraq were terrible under Saddam, no doubt, but the little stability Iraqis had is now gone. People are being kidnapped daily; There is barely any electricity; sectarian thugs rule the streets, many with the help of crooked politicians and police. Americans thought that wiping the slate clean, without really paying attention to ethnic differences or realistic intelligence, would be quick and simple. If you constantly kill and humiliate the people you claim to be saving, do you expect them not fight back?

They stopped Saddam's atrocities.
But Saddam isn't the only bad actor in the area, unfortunately.
Iraq is currently the focus of a world-wide conflict between Islamo-fascists and the rest of us. If they weren't busy in Iraq, they would be doing more terrorism in the US and elsewhere.
You didn't really think it would be that easy, did you?

I heard that when Saddam was in ruling that it wasn't as bad despite what the man did. Now it is crazy! I think it will just get worse now that their former dictator is gone!!
