Hi Guada,
Certainly, you can have a career in this area. One particularly growing area is web design, which involves graphics, among other things.
But as to whether or not you can be successful, or famous or rich in it depends on a lot of things. Opportunity, job openings, how hard you work, and whether you make wise choices within your field.
I don't know about England, specifically, but you would want to locate to an area where there is a lot of business, especially the kind that constantly needs graphic designers.
Best advise: Find a professor of graphic design and discuss this with him/her. Or even better: someone working in the field. Look up graphic design on the web and find out how to contact some until you find a designer willing to talk to you.

The only thing I can see as a possible response is graphic design over some kind of artwork? do you prefer the communication aspect too? It sounds as if you could go either way (look at your work and find out if it says 'design' or more 'art'). Graphic design is a form of art so to get the best results you must apply a professional to use their abilities and relevant experience in the discipline of layout needed for the project, site, marketing, promotion, typography, print along with the use of colour. Design does much more than make your business look great. It is a visual language that communicates your institution's style into a universe of potential customers before you have even meet them. It evokes an emotion that makes you memorable in a sea of adversaries. It inspires visitors to action or a visit to your own site.

Always get sufficient education (research what the sort of places you want to work for are requiring - a big place wanting an advanced degree, or a small company that's fine with an outstanding porfolio?). Try to get experience while you're still learning, and build a portfolio. Maybe try to go to school in England for a year or so, so you can make contacts there and get more help from them.

tons and tons of careers in graphic design.

get smart, get good, get experienced. There are so many old dinosaur in these shops that just need to retire. learn the new programs and don't miss the newer ones.

do you want a career in it... well i have a career in it, and here i am. 2AM procrastinating from doing a layout that i need by 10 am for a multimillion dollar client that thrives on making my life hell... the work is fun and rewarding, but you need to decide if it's worth the heart-ache...

get good. and good luck.

oh and yes there is money in most graphic design (especially if you go corporate...) do you make as much as investment bankers? no. but you know, they're investment bankers... i think the trade off is definately worth it.

It is kind of a hit or miss thing, and definately has a lot of people trying for a few jobs. Best I can tell you is set up a website and see what kind of traffic you get. Or work on somebody elses for free to get a feeling for it. If you can generate significant traffic, you probably have an eye for it. If not, have a back-up career ready, you are going to need it for the beer and pretzel money.

there is a huge market for graphic designers and lots of money to be made... think about it, with every new idea and product that gets made, it needs to be advertised, websites, magazines, posters,t.v ... all this is done my graphic designers.

but it is tough, alot of people are flooding this sector, the best thing that you can do, is practice, build up a fantastic portfolio... then the world is your canvas.
