Joan Gleason spent her life working in a sewing factory in terrible conditions. The pay was substandard, there were no benefits of any type and often times the bosses would belittle her because she couldn't keep pace with the younger, faster seamstresses. She had been married to Harry, her childhood sweetheart for over thirty years until he died recently of heart failure. With the passing of Harry, Joan was able to leave the sewing factory behind as Harry had two very nice life insurance polices that enabled her to retire without ever having to worry about expenses again.
This morning when Joan awoke she decided to go to the Zoo and see the new baby panda that had recently been put on public display. She wanted to see if the zoo would be a good place to leave her new found wealth in the event that she passed away before she had an opportunity to spent it all. As she walked down the stairs on her porch, she happened to see her neighbor's 12 year old daughter watching her. The young girls name is Amanda and because both of her parents work long hours at the local Hospital she is usually left at home by herself.
"Hello, Ms. Amanda", Joan called out. "Shouldn't you be in school" she asked. Amanda explained that all students had the day off so that the teachers could go to some type of teachers conference. Amanda asked Joan where she was heading and when she learned it was the zoo she asked if she could come along. "What a terrific idea! Let's go call one of your parents and if they say yes then off we will go". Joan said. On that note, Joan went back into her house, looked up Amanda's moms work number and gave her a called her. The line was picked up immediately and after a brief conversation with the mother permission was granted to the trip to the zoo.
They arrived at the zoo around mid morning. Although it was crowded, it wasn't as bad as going in the summer or on the weekends. Joan purchased two general admission tickets which included a ride in the bus that takes the visitors around the different areas of the zoo. Amanda could hardly contain her excitement and was standing in line with a big grin on her face.
After going through the entry gate, Joan and Amanda headed straight to the panda exhibit. Because there are so few Panda in the United States, and the ones that are here are only on loan from China, this display always has a line.
As we inched our way to the glass enclouser, I heard a blood curdling scream...oh, that was me I realized as I looked into the eyes of the tiger that was walking on the pavement not more than ten feet away. Somehow one of the tigers had gotten loose but luckily for us it was busy stalking a peacock. I took Amanda by the arm and started slowly walking away from the direction that the tiger had gone. As we were passing the monkey cages I remember a little bit of a poem that my mother used to say when we were at the zoo. "A little roar. A little quack. A little Thing is on my back." I never thought in a million years that I would find myself with a real live monkey hanging on me, but no sooner had I thought of that silly poem did a monkey run across my shoulders and jump into the nearest tree. Talk about startling. If someone had said this was going to happen I would have said "You have got to be kidding" as stuff like this only happens in the movies.
By now most people in the area where we were knew something was amiss. The zoo employees were directing everyone to please leave the park in an orderly fashion. Well buddy, I have news for you when a 800 pound Tiger is loose there is no such thing as "orderly fashion", therefore, we all started running at once.
As we slowed down I could see that the tree tops contained about a dozen monkeys swinging about on the upper most branches. One of the shapes looked alot like a gorillia but as it wasn't safe to stop, I couldn't tell for sure. We made our way past empty enclosures that should have held the wolves. I glanced at Amanda and for a young girl she was actually handling this very well. She wasn't crying or even hysterical, if anything I think she was more calm than I was. The zoo employees were running all over the place now. Some of them carried dart guns and others I suspect had guns loaded with real bullets.
If truth be known this would make a great movie... all we need are the camera men. However, there is a real difference from the movies and real life as we found out when we came face to face with one of the escaped wolves.
We had made our way to the upper area that housed the birds, and as we turned to make our way to the exit gate we didn't see the wolf who was eatting one of the flamingos. The wolf hearing our approach dropped the dead bird and began to advance in our direction. It wasn't until he was almost upon us that I saw him and the blood on his muzzle. I stopped in my tracks and pushed Amanda behind me. As I stood there looking at the wolf, I felt Amanda moving away from me. I hoped that she had found an escape out of this nighmare. Shortly there after, I felt a breath on the back of my neck. Turns out it was only Amanda who had come back with a bucket of water. She handed the bucket to me and said "Throw the water! Throw the water"! which is what I did. The water was enough to distract the wolf from us which gave us time to run to the exit gate and leave this terrible day behind us.
The news tonight said that all animals had been recaptured. They didn't have an exact number for all of the people who were hurt, however all are expected to make a full recovery. Currently the zoo is investigating the incident and hopes to implement corrections so this does not occur again.
After my day at the zoo, I have decided that I am not going to leave them my money after all. Instead, I am giving it to Amanda as she has proven that she is worthy of it.
