When converting a fraction to a decimal the rules about repeating/terminating decimals are really quite easy

The factors of 10 (the base of the decimal system) are 2 and 5

So any denominator that is a pure multiple of just 2's and 5's will always terminate

eg, 2, 4, 8, 16 ..... 5. 25. 125. .... 10, 20 40, 50, 80 ... 2^m * 5 ^n where m, n are positive integers.

If the denominator is not such a positive integer that is not such a number ie has any other positive integers amongst its factors its decimal will repeat. eg, 3, 6 (= 2 * 3), 15 (= 5 * 3), 28 (= 4 * 7), 240 (= 2^4 * 5 * 3) etc

Any number, that has a decimal that neither repeats nor terminates, is irrational and so cannot be expressed as the ratio of two integers (eg √2 (square root of any number that is not a perfect square, cube root of any number that is not a perfect cube, etc), Euler's number (e), the golden ratio (φ), the ratio of the length of the circumference of a circle to the length of its diameter (π) )

If the decimal continues in a repeating pattern, it is a repeating number. If you are preforming the math manually rather than by calculator, you will notice that you are cycling through the same operators as well.

the number goes on like 2.33333333333333333333 all the way till the whole screen is filled
if its in a book sometimes it can have a line over the number(s) that are repeating

If it is something like...

3.33333333333333333333333333333333333

That means 3.3 repeating because the threes after the decimal point continue for more than a certain number of spaces.

if the digits after the decimal repeat in some kind of pattern

like 6.6565656565... would be called "6 point 6 5 repeating"

or 2.222222 .. would be "2.2 repeating"
