Yes, to compensate for what they perceive to be a fault in themselves. A hypocrite will also magnify the criticism. It's easier to point a finger at someone else than to do something about yourself.

Often people criticize in others what they hate about themselves. But the things I'm most critical of are those that are opposite of how I am.

growing up, all i got was criticism from my mom. she is one of the biggest hypocrites i've ever seen. she goes to church ("born again" and all) but she lies and cheated on my dad since i was a baby (i'm 25 now), and tried to ruin my marriage.
