I'm trying to make a bedframe for a morbidly obese person.
I need suggestions on how to do this and what kind of wood to use.
I should first state: I have no idea what I'm doing, but I m hoping it may not be to hard to do.
I want to start out with 4 planks? of wood to make the frame I want them to interlock then I will reinforce it by using nails or screws. Next a plank lengthwise down the middle. Next a large slab of wood on top the size of a queen sized mattress. Next screw that onto the planks in several places. Would I need a boxspring too?
I need to know what type wood to use.
Does my plan sound right or are all you skilled carpenters laughing your heads off? Please let me know before I get this project started.

You're on the right track in what you've described. I have built quite a few platform beds from 2"x4" lumber and plywood and screwed it together. Take the dimensions of the mattress you'll be using and adjust your platform accordingly.

I would recommend against a box spring as it would be unneccessary and the mattress directly on the plywood base would actually lend more back support to the person.

First, find out what height they want the mattress to be. For the people who have beds I've built I made them quite high due to back problems and difficulty sitting up. If the bed is higher then it's much easier for a disabled person who is ambulatory to get into and out of bed.

Second, choose a sturdy mattress that won't wear out quickly. I like tempur-pedic myself but most any foam core would be good.

Third, in constructing this bed think about making six individual sections that would be identical. Basically make six large boxes approximately 27"(long)x30"(wide)x (any height) this way you will be able to move the 'bed' in the future and it will aid in construction.

I agree with the first dude, you need more support across the middle...that said, if you can find an oldschool foot board and head board that interlock into metal rails shaped like an "L" in cross section..you could cut 2x4's to fit between the "L" channels (in stead of the box spring), which would be hella strong, and then just put a mattress on that....

Alternately, if there is an IKEA near you, they have mattress bases that use no boxspring, and they seem to be sturdier than the bed frames you see that use a box spring.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/ManualOfWoodworking
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.
