You may have other software (IE: firewall/antivirus) on your computer that scan browser activity, thus prohibiting any sudden stop/cancel.

You could try running your task manager and forcing your browser to "end process".

How is it they don't whenever I press stop on a page it stops loading and I can type in another page to load a new one? I use IE 7 and Netscape 8.

Maybe I missunderstand, It's called the Stop button, hotkey works with all the above. in IE it's menu 'View'/'stop'.

Pressing the escape key (Esc) always works for me.
