i.e. is an abbreviation for the Latin expression "id est". Which translates to "that is" in English.

It's purpose is to further CLARIFY or ENNUMERATE, not EXEMPLIFY. What follows "i.e." are not examples, but ennumerations. There's a difference.

For example, in the sentence: "Was financed by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain (i.e., Ferdinand and Isabella)", Ferdinand and Isabella are not examples, they are the actual Monarchs to which the sentence refers to".

"For example" is abbreviated "e.g." Which is an abbreviation for the Latin expression "exempli gratia".

Actually IE does not literally mean FOR EXAMPLE, we just pretend.

IE really comes from Latin and means THAT IS.

Id Est (Latin: That Is)

In English we roughly translate it to meaning EXAMPLE.
