Shadowfax (meaning "grey-hair"), chief of the Mearas. The Mearas were a race of noble, highly intelligent, wild horses that lived as long as Men. Legends tell that the ancestors of the Mearas were brought from the West by Béma the hunter (known as the Vala* Oromë to the Elves).

The ancestors of the Rohirrim formed a bond with these horses to the point that years later the Mearas would only allow themselves to be ridden by the Lord of the Mark or his sons. Gandalf proved the exception to this long-honored tradition by training Shadowfax, who was given to him by King Théoden, Lord of the Mark.

It is believed that Shadowfax went West over the Sea with Gandalf after the events in The Lord of the Rings, but this is never explicitly stated.

*Valar ("The Powers") are fourteen great spirits in physical form who dwell in Arda. Vala is the singular form. Essentially they are god-like beings.

Shadowfax is the best of the horse that Gandalf was allowed to take by the King of Rohan, in which he greatly resented while under the charm of the evil that lay upon the land. Once Gandalf met with Strider and Frodo in Rivendale he released the horse back to the wilds.

Shadowfax is a king of horses. Theoden gave him to Gandalf in thanks for ridding him of Grima Wormtongue and the threat of Saruman.
