I've been customer service for 10 years, most of that in management. I'm currently a Life and Health Insurance agent but thats not going well. I live in an economically depressed area.

I'm and artist and writer by nature but that won't pay the bills.

Moving takes money which we don't have. I can move to a larger city but my wife and I have agreed that its better for our children to be educated away from the crime and violence of a big city.

Laura- I'm still a year away from finishing a BFA that I quit several years ago. I've considered this route but teaching won't be possible for a 1-3 years at best.

Well have you ever considered teaching art? It is work no doubt but if you love art and want to share that with others. Teaching might be the way to go. Notice I say might. Teaching is a difficult job despite what many say.Relocating is probably a good idea to. That's what I'm going to do.

The employment world has changed. Now they hire you as a temp first, see how you work out, then offer you a full time job, later.
My wife signed up with every agency in our town, worked temp work at a lot of places, got the job she wanted, 6 months later.

Hope this helps.

Do the art and writing on the weekends.

Try getting in at your local newspaper. Most small papers are always looking for "stringers". People to cover board meetings, or HS sports. These jobs don't pay well, but are a foot in the door. You could do it while still having your day job, then work your way into full time reporting.

My first impression is for you to relocate. I am not trying to be a wise guy, that is my first thought. We recently moved from one coast to the other and the difference it has made in our lives is unmeasurable. It's a whole new world out here. With 10 years experience, you can get a job anywhere, don't you think?

Peace!
