I would first look into insurance cost for a firebird for a first time driver.....I am sure they are high if it has a V8 motor.

Some good first time cars:
Newer cars:

Ford Focus
Mazda 3
VW Golf/Rabbit
Honda Civic
Dodge Caliber
Chevy Cobolt SS
Toyota Yaris

Used:
Honda Prelude, Civic, Accord
Toyota Celica, Supra, Camry
Dodge Neon SRT4
Ford Focus SVT
Mazda Protiege, 626, RX7, Miata
Dodge Magnum with V6
Chrysler 300 with V6.

Good Luck

Check Consumer Reports Used Car Guide or try their website. You'll get info on reliability, price, past problems, specs etc. Edmunds.com is also an excellent source. If you're friendly with your mechanic, ask them for recommendations. Personal experience: Toyota, Honda and Mazda have all worked for me. My prior 2 cars were a 99 Saturn SL2 and 97 Mazda 626, both used and both manual transmission (don't bother with auto trans in the Mazda). Both ran very nicely and got between 31-34 mpg. Manuals are usually cheaper and get a few miles more to the gallon. Do your research on the model years as a year can make a difference in reliability/quality. Don't forget to check out the vehicle's history on carfax.com. Good luck!

A firebird, yeah great car for a teenager = speeding tickets, and accidents. Get him something midsize like a Ford Taurus, or a small SUV or Pickup. Don't get a sports car because with a teen driver a sports car will have really high insurance. Check your local used car dealerships for a good reliable vehicle. Test drive different cars, trucks and suv's before you buy don't just pick the first one you find. My first vehicle was a 2WD ford ranger, didn't look all that great, and the 2.8L v6 engine had plenty enough power that I could tow and haul things when I had to for work.

Check out the Taurus or the Camry. Those have the best safety ratings in their class.
