What was its name and what kind of animal was it? Would you recommend it for a first time pet owner?

I was given my first pet when I was 6 years old. He was a Parakeet and his name was Cheeko.

I understand that Parakeets are very good first time birds, but honestly, and please don't take my word for it, Cheeko was a bird of a different feather. He was picked out by someone as a gift for me. If I had picked him out myself, I would have picked out a much friendlier bird.

I had Cheeko for 6 years, and then later I got a canary, named Cheery (short for "Christmas Cheer" because he sang for the time Christmas morning). Now there's a bird that a first time pet-keeper can enjoy. I had Cheery for 14 years. He was another gift, but this time, I picked him out.

My first pet was a cat named Figaro.

I was 5 and got him as a kitten, he was great because he was indoor/outdoor and very easy to maintain.

I highly reccomend a cat for a first pet, they are more independent and afffectionate. besides getting them fixed and vaccinated, all they really need is food.

Depending on where you live you will decide how to figure out the litter box situation. If you live in a small space there are many box options to minimise smell, there is also the automatic scooper that is great.
I lived in a big house with a very large yard and there was no need for a ccatox, cats seem to understand where to potty, it's much more instinctual than having to train a dog. My cats went outside and was never a problem unless they ended up locked in a room or something.

tip: get your pet spayed while they are still very young (before 1 year) this will improve their personality, they will be more domesticated. If you wait 'till after they've gone into heat for the first time they wil continue to act like they are spraying and may be more aggressive.

good luck! happy pet-hunting!!!

My first pet was a beagle (dog) named Elmo! We got him from a shelter, so if you are going to get an animal that would be in a shelter, then adopt. Save lives :]
For a first time pet owner, however, I wouldn't reccomend a beagle. They need alot of attention, eat everything, but are dorky and lovable.
Anyways, I would go with something easy (not fish, although fish seem easy, they aren't! they always die.) Try a hamster or mouse, something along those lines. If you think you are ready for something bigger, first consider a cat. They are more very independant, but still need some attention. I wouldn't go with a dog unless you are really ready to commit. They are so sweet but most are hyper and want your attention 24/7.
Hope this helps!

fish, didn't last more than a week. my first real pet was a kitty named buttons. cats are ideal for new pet owners, they are loving and playful, like dogs, and u can interact with them, and at the same time they're not AS huge a responsibility, especially once litter trained. if/when u get ur kitty, keep him/her in a small room (preferrably the least used bathroom in the house). this will help with box training(it will always be right there) and will also help it adjust to new surroundings. please be a good person and go to the humane society and save an animals life. good luck!

It was a mixed collie from the pound I got if for my first birthday. And I had her for probably 14 years she was a puppy when we got her and she was the best animal that I have ever owned. Her name was yep yep I named her because she yepped a lot when we first got her. When we would pull up in the yard she would take out other dogs around the edge of the property and meet us back at the car.We think she did this to prevent them from being ran over.We had another full blooded collie after she died.H was also a very smart and good dog.

My first pet was a quarter pony her name is Snickers. And I definitly would not recomend a horse for a first time pet owner unless you have someone that would help you with it.

my parents had a cat named mouse when I was born. We called her kitter mouse and she hated me until I was ten.

The first pet for me was Silver, my pony. Shortly follwed by dozens of others...cats, dogs, cows, a horse, three ponies, and fish...plus that "mouse" that I found my cat pumpkinseed playing with that I "rescued" that was really a baby rat that got loose in my room. Boy, mom LOVED me for that one.
