You are right that we should be thankful every day for what we have and to thank God for those things.

The history of Thanksgiving in early America started out as a special day to be thankful for a bountiful harvest, as most crops were harvested in the Autumn, prior to the harsh winter of the Northeast.

Originally, different communities set their own dates. Eventually, it became a Federal holiday.

Unfortunately, today it has become something of an excuse to kick off the commercialization of the Christmas season, but for some people it is still an important holiday to gather family (who may live apart) together for a special day of giving thanks for all that life offers.

By the way, the people here who thank that Thanksgiving is not a holiday based upon giving thanks to God are completely incorrect. The original Thanksgiving celebrations were about thanking God for a good harvest. Later, during the US Civil War, President Lincoln said:

"The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God

"....It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens...."

It absolutely has religous significance. It is a shame that some people don't know, understand, or appreciate this.

You're right-- we should thank God daily. However, it is still nice to have a holiday where families gather together and ppl look back at the past year and think about what they are thankful for. Thanksgiving was started by the Pilgrims who were Christians but most Americans, regardless of religion like the idea of giving thanks.

No one ever "had to." I think whoever thought it up (TG holiday) had good intentions. You know, not everyone gives thanks to God everyday, even some never at all (although they should). It's more of a gathering of friends and family to share what they are thankful for. Most people don't do THAT everyday. It's in our nature to set up a 'special day' of the year for just about everything (birthdays, mothers day, labor day, Independence Day, etc.)

Thanksgiving -- a day to thank God. What do you do? Thanksgiving isn't just about the family coming over and the turkey, but we need to remember to thank God that day for His provisions and protection in our life -- giving thanks. Going to church that day is a good way to celebrate it. What do you do?

Thanksgiving Day has nothing to do with religion . .
Why do all the religion fanatics try & make EVERYTHING about their fantasy ?
It is so annoying ! Go away and leave our holiday alone !
