also does the inch per gallon work for salt water aquariums?

I wouldn't go with the inch per gallon rule, although many people will debate. My general rule for saltwater is 1" per 10 gallons. Obviously, this is not set in stone. You can have a 2-3" clownfish in a 5 gallon nano. You just can't keep any other fish in there with it. Saltwater fish cannot be heavily stocked the way that freshwater fish can.

The inch per gallon rule never works.

Porcupine puffers need at least 125 gallons.
