Reload the operating system, if hthat doesn't work it's a hardware problem, send it back.

The blue vertical lines could be 2 things: corrupt files, or a bad display. The fact that your screen ends up going blank TENDS to point the finger at the display. It could also be a bad video driver.

Do you have the original disks? Dell systems usually have a rescue disk. Try doing a restore, or at least see if you can run diagnostics. If you have (or know someone with) a bootable Linux disk, you could try that- and watch the display.

If the display still won't play ball, contact Dell again. Tell them you think it's a bad display, and explain what you've done to prove it. They may have other options, but at least you'll be on the right track.

Sounds like you may have a problem with the video driver loading. Or it may be the resolution is set to high for your laptop screen. Boot into safe mode. If that boots, then check the driver and the screen res. Compared to specs of the hardware.

If not, may be corrupted OS. There are ways to fix but they are very involved. (high level of xp knowledge) You could restore your OS, but that will cause you to lose your data.

If that does not correct issue then you may have a video card failing. That would be a warranty issue

It sounds like the integrated video or the video card in your laptop is having problems. The graphics processing chip might be overheating and gone bad which causes the artifacts, the blue vertical lines, to show up.

If your laptop is still under warranty I recommend you call Dell and tell them to fix your graphics processor.

My friend that's a current model. Please go to an authorized Dell Service Provider and insist that they fix it. Tell them this is a customer sat issue. They usually help me. I have a Dell latitude D410 and Dell helps me a lot. If they don't resolve it you can escalate the problem directly to Dell corporate and they will respond ASAP. Dell is very strict on service and quality. Hoep I helped a little.

Did you change the display's settings? It sounds like you're having a problem when the display goes into graphics mode.

Have you tried starting the laptop in safe mode? Maybe it would use more generic settings. If that works, you could change your display settings and reboot.

Check for a bad stick of memory. If you are lucky you have 2 and can run with just one to test it. It should be accessable through a door on the bottom.

Start it up, and hold F8 to get into safe mode and try to see what the conflict/problem is. If you can't solve the problem, you may have to just reformat your drive and reinstall windows.

something could be wrong with your operating system, not your labtop. If you have XP i would maybe trying to install it again. if i were you i would probably get someone professional to look at it before you do anything.
