it is my experience that if sufficient heat is applied to a kernal and it fails to pop, then it must lack the necessary water content to actually pop... who knows?

a friend used to recommend storing the kernals in a jar of water to maintain the moisture level... does this decrease the failure rate?

The only way I know to pop them after they have failed to pop is with a hammer.

I think that the real reason it didn't pop is that the kernel had an internal defect which released the pressure too slowly to let the kernel actually pop. Since the kernel is already defective, I don't think even soaking it will keep the moisture in there as it starts to heat up. Instead of popping, you would probably here steam "hissing" as it was escaping from the defective ones.

Quite by accident I found out that each kernel of corn has a small amount of water or liquid in it. When you heat them this liquid gets so hot that it cooks the corn inside the kernel. When the temp gets too hot it explodes therefore causing the "popping" of the corn.
As far as keeping it in water? I don't see how this will help if the liquid is inside the kernel to begin with. My guess would be that the outside of it cracked from drying out and let the liquid inside dry out. Of course there is also the chance that it cracked just enough to let the steam out but didn't have enough time to cook the corn inside.

I have actually re-popped kernels that haven't popped the first time around. So to me I believe its possible as for the moisture content not a clue LOL

i would think the moisture content would have to be just right for it to pop after the 2nd heating. yo0u re right though, the original moisture would be gone to pop in the 1st place

a question should be responded with an answer. not a stupid remark, so i will return the favor, if you were so smart you would know what a search engine is. maybe you should do your research before you try to make a lame attempt at trying to be either smart or smart axx. d.h.s.
