President Ford never resigned; he was defeated in the 1976 election by Jimmy Carter - a loss to our nation if ever there was.

You may be thinking of President Nixon, who resigned amidst the Watergate scandal - about which enough has been written to fill a small stadium so I won't go into it here. Suffice it to say that Nixon probably could have stayed if he'd come clean about the original offense, which was small potatoes (especially by today's standards) and in which he wasn't directly involved. It was the cover up and the arrogant way he handled the controversy that got him in trouble. (Sound like a recent former President?)

Nixon's Vice President, Spiro Agnew, was closer to the actual break-in and resigned first, in the face of imminent impeachment by Congress. Ford was confirmed as a replacement Vice President. Shortly after Nixon was facing impeachment as well; unlike with Agnew, it is unlikely the charges would have stuck, but he chose to resign instead. At that point Ford became the President. Ford is sometimes called the 'accidental President' because he was never elected and wasn't really seeking the job.

President Ford did not resign. He took over as President when Nixon resigned! President Ford ran when his term was up, but was defeated by Jimmy Carter.

There was no reason, he did not resign. He was defeated by Jimmy Carter in the election after he served as interim president when Richard Nixon resigned due to the Watergate scandal.

Gerald Rudolph Ford (July 14, 1913 – December 26, 2006) was the 38th President (1974–1977), and 40th Vice President (1973–1974) of the United States. Ford was the first person appointed to the vice presidency under the terms of the 25th Amendment. Upon succession to the presidency, Ford became the only person to hold that office without having been elected either President or Vice President. Prior to becoming Vice President, he served for over eight years as the Republican Minority Leader of the House of Representatives as a representative from Michigan's 5th congressional district.

The Ford administration saw the withdrawal of American forces from the Vietnam War, the execution of the Helsinki Accords amid the Cold War and the continuing specter of inflation and recession. Ford came under intense criticism for granting a preemptive pardon to President Richard Nixon for his role in the Watergate scandal, and was subsequently defeated by Democrat Jimmy Carter in the 1976 presidential election.

Nixon resigned following the fallout from the Watergate Scandal, his VP Gerald Ford, took over. Ford then lost his re-election bid to Carter. It's said voters were angered at Ford's pardoning of Nixon and that cost him points in an otherwise tight race.

Gerald for did not resign, he was defeated in the 1976 election against Jimmy Carter. He pardoned Richard Nixon for his cover up of the Watergate case after his resignation. Ford served his two years and was never elected, but he was a very peace full gentleman and did a great job while in office. He was replaced by Carter, another nice guy, but in my opinion not a very power full man when it came to foreign affairs....KECK

For everyone who said Ford was Nixons VP your completley wrong.
He was speaker of the house, both Nixon and his VP Agneu (sp?) resigned after watergate, so the third in line was ford. He then lost to Carter in the next election.

He didn't he lost the election. Some believe it was because he patron Nixon. This election was in 1976 when he ran for a term of his own.Because he was the only president to be elected by congress. Because Nixon was in trouble for Watergate.
