Since finding out a local franchise of a very well-known sandwich shop, as well as a pizza service next door, was recently shutdown due to violations, I am very reluctant to eat out and I really enjoy eating out.
Are local health inspections public knowledge and if so, where can I get them?

Don't eat there if the employees are not wearing gloves is one thing to look out for.

Contact you local Department of Health. Each county has one. If you search "your county's name + Health Department (or department of Health)" I went on line to my county, Santa Clara, CA and did a search on their website for "Restaurant Inspection" or "Restaurant Reports" and came up with a website called www.decadeonline.com, you can go there and see if they have your county. It seems to be a service that the county uses. I just typed in the name of a restaurant, and voila! The latest health inspection report is there. I actually own a restaurant and have always meant to find this out myself! Just so you know, restaurants get spot checked about every 3-4 months, unless a complaint is filed. In this case the inspector will go to the restaurant right away. Also every restaurant (at least in the State of California) must have a certified Food-Safety expert, usually 2 or more cooks and 1-2 dining room staff as well, at all times the restaurant is open. They have to take and pass an intense Food-Safety course. I took my first one while at The Culinary Academy I hope this helps ya! Probably too much info though...

Your state should have an health agency that records such violations in resturaunts and hotels. You can search keywords your state then inspection/ violations.
You can also find out if your local library has a reference info on that topic....

In my city/county the health inspection has to be posted in the window of all restaurants. I would assume its public knowledge, and you can probably call the county dept. of health for more info.

Move to a state where they post the Health Department rating in the Window. North Carolina comes to mind. I live in Ohio. We like to live dangerously.

Your county might have its health department records available on a webpage. If not, your local courthouse will be able to give you the information, but you might have to ask around several departments there.

Contact the local health department. I have friends who worked at Wendy's. You would not believe the filth that goes on there.
