Simply put - guppies are tropical and goldfish are not. The goldfish require 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit. This is not to say that 75-degree water will kill the goldfish. It's just that the lower temperatures are healthier for them. Cooler water holds more oxygen, which larger goldfish require for good health.
Plus, once the goldfish get bigger, bye bye guppies - they will more than likely eat them. Sorry, but no goldfish. Tetras are good mixes with about anything, though, i like fruit tetras, they are pretty easy going. Black skirt tetras are nice, but can be agressive (rare, though) i hear Danios are a good mix as well as Cory's, although I don't know from personal experiance. I really would look for a differant kind of fish other than goldfish to mix in your tank. They are pretty, but should be only with other goldfish, and in a very large tank.
Hope I could help!

Is there a reason you asked the question again? Well, my answer is not going to change. It doesn't matter what the goldfish are like now, they will grow up to be plenty big enough to swallow guppies whole. Unless of course you put them into a small tank and stunt them. Read about stunting at http://bryce.t31g3n.googlepages.com/fishstunting
Also goldfish are coldwater and guppies aretropical. By keeping them together you are causing one or the other to suffer. Guppies need temps 78-82, goldfish need temps below 72. If you don't need a heater to get your water to 78, then that is great, but get a different tank with a cooler to keep goldfish in.

Guppies are a warm water fish, while goldfish prefer cool water. While the two can survive in the same tank, one of the two will be in waters that aren't best for them.
So to answer your question, sure they could survive together, but I don't recommend it for the exact reason that you already know.

There is ONE way to mix them, you have to, and when I say have to, I mean it. You have to keep an eye on your Ammonia levels. Goldfish produce more waste than any other fish, their only competition are Cichlids. Golfish are VERY dirty and require constant cleanings and filters check-ups, they are kind of high-maintenance (busting the media gossip that they can live in bowls)...
Anyway, if you keep you Ammonia levels down to zero, and you make sure there is enough room in your tank, with enough cleaning, air production (air pump with stone or something like that), and filter check-ups, you should have no problem pulling this great endeavor off! LOL...
If you have any questions or comments, just e-mail me at either nsaneknutkase@yahoo.com (Yahoo!) or smckinst@capital.edu (School).
