The materials are a length of tube that goes from your nose into your stomach, a 60ml syringe, stethescope, water based lubricant, Cetacaine spray, Lidocaine jelly, feeding bag, the solution the doctor orders and a pump.
The nostril and throat are numbed using the lidocaine jelly and cetacaine spray. The tube is measure from tip of nose to belly button and marked with tape. The tube is then lubricated with the water based lubricant and syringe attached to open end of tube. The persons head is placed so that the chin touches the chest, this helps prevent coughing and gagging. The tube is inserted into the nostril and slowly advanced down the throat, the person is told to swallow and as they do the tube is guided in until you reach the taped marking on tube. Then with the syringe and stethescope you inject air into the tube and listen over the stomach to hear the air bolus to ensure tube is in right place. Then a portable chest xray is done to confrim placement. The bag of solution is attached to the tube and plced on the pump. The nurse then sets the rate of the feeding, as ordered by a doctor
