i can't give you a history of dolphins, but i can point you to a place where you can read about different stories featuring dolphins in the mythology of different cultures as well as in cotemporary stories from real life.
as to why they are important... they're the closest thing out there to a human. yes, chimps have the correct number of limbs, and look closer to us than dolphins, but did you know that dolphins are the only other animal that engages in sexual activity for fun, and the only other animal that understands the pointing gesture? dolphins have always been known to go out of their way to help people, even wild dolphins who have never been around people enough to associate them with food. as far back as ancient greece, dolphins were known to save people, to help people fish.
there are other things, of course.
dolphin sonar creates something called cavitation in human cells, which in turn stimulates healing. being around dolphins just plain makes you feel good, and it helps you heal. people with different kinds of cancer have gone into remission after swiming with dolphins.
they are not aggressive, even in their wildest state, (though of course, they don't like intruders if they're feeding or are vulnerable), and are curious and playful. they are especially careful of children, sick people, and pregnant women. it's as if they sense vulnerability and are more careful with those who need the most care.
i believe they are also capable of language. real language, like our language. dolphins are special in many ways.
