Is it bad to shave against the grain on a mans face?

I like how much more close the shave is, but I've heard that its bad for you. Is it true?

The main issue with shaving against the grain is that many guy's face skin is too sensitive for it, which results in shaving bumps and other issues with ingrown hair or terrible razor burn.
However, if you think you can handle it, go for it.

It's not so much "bad", but it can cause ingrown whiskers. I watched a professional (upscale) barber give instructions on this on TV...
(1) Take a shower, or apply a hot cloth to your face. (Optional!)
(2) Apply shaving cream.
(3) Slide the blade in the direction of the whiskers (usually down).
(4) Now, slide the blade across the whiskers (if the whiskers grow down, then shave across, not up)
(5) Rinse and dry
(6) Apply aftershave if you want!

I do this every day, and it works great!

If you have curly hair, it's definetly not going to help you. I have curly hair, and I have to be real careful when I shave.

I know you're trying to get the closest shave possible, but if you don't want shave bumps, try to avoid shaving against the grain. As long as you reshave over it in the correct direction, it should be fine.

If you have problems with shave bumps, try to get a good after-shave lotion (not after shave; you want an oil-free lotion).
