Word of mouth is your best bet. Ask around. Ask people at work, family, friends, etc., also look at local supermarket or laundrymat bullitin boards. As a last resort, look in the classifieds. Also, depending upon your situation (are you a senior or are you low income?), you could contact your local housing authority and they can put you in touch with the correct people. Then plan a day to go and look at a few that are in the right price range and that will also meet your needs. Don't be in a rush, plan ahead and try to avoid leases unless you prefer them.
Good luck to you.

Newspaper classified ads.
Rental agencies (look up in your local Yellow Pages).
Online sources.
** Best of all, know the area you WANT to live in, and drive around. Often, you will see for rent signs in front of apartments with vacancies, unless vacancy rate is very low in your area.
