Just curious - I plan to travel the instant I get out of college. The only thing I need to contemplate is how I'm going to pay for it. Now, you should probably know that I am a very ambitious traveler and plan to do a LOT while I'm gone. I can't see myself being able to save enough money (well, I'm trying..I only have a part time job since I'm a full time student), so I'm considering taking out a loan, doing my travel thing, then coming back and paying it all off. Good idea? Bad idea? Should I lay off the idea of travelling as much as I can before I settle down? Any input is appreciated!

If I read this correctly, you're already in college. Personally, I don't know how you're going to have ANY money by the time you finish up, because all my earnings during school went toward reducing what I owed for my degree.

If you have student loans (of some sort) now, remember that they're going to need to be repaid - in the US, that means continuing payments on them at the same time as you're expecting to be traveling.

From my personal experience - don't go further into debt (right out of college) than you have to ... and taking a loan to make the trip is going down that road. Not that I'm against the travel ... just the opposite. But I'd take a year or two out of school to get my feet under me, in terms of finances, with some of your own money socked away for just this kind of thing.

Then take all your vacation at once - or a leave of absence, or whatever other means you opt for - and make your journey. You can extend your travel time by working (at least in some areas) while you're traveling ... especially if you've either quit your original employment or have a 6-12 month leave of absence.

On the other hand, who knows? Depending on what your job outlook is like, you could have one where the COMPANY is paying for you to travel everywhere you want to go. (I got really lucky, and fell into that category!).

In the short strokes - don't take the loan, especially if you're coming out of school owing money already.

You can travel cheap! I don't recommend taking a loan. But try to think of some creative ways to bring some money in like sell textbooks on Amazon etc. My daughter even rented dvd's to her college freinds. I'm sure that you can think of something. Also try to work you trip around people that you know living there or even your friends may have contacts where you are going. Once you decide where start to share it with others you will be amazed at the doors that will open. I am a travel bug! It will be cheaper than you think use hostels, eat cheap! The main expense will be your airfare.

BAD IDEA .... the experiences of your travels will last you a life time. Not many get that opportunity. You don't want to come back and have that burden over you which will deminish the rewards that you gain by having to pay it back.

Save for your travels and you will enjoy them more. If need be, get a job while you are away, it will add to your experience even more. Don't regret travelling because of what you endure when you get back. Trust me, I did it that way, and I know others who have suffered because of the repayments when they got back. By all means have a credit card with you, that will open up experiences if need be, but DONT go knowing it all has to be repaid on your return.
