i need what i think is a u-trap or p-trap. it should be equal length on both sides and pvc material. not using it for plumbing but to assist my students with their pitch matching when singing in class.

one end is held at the mouth and the other held up to the ear. it sounds crazy but really works. i purchased these once before at a hardware store but don't remember exactly what they are called. can someone who knows plumbing materials tell me what it is called and where i can buy them about 30 or them?

The first thing I thought was also "p" trap but when I tried to figure out how to have equal length and also get it from the mouth to the ear it Struck me like a bolt of lightning!! It's called and "S" trap. It serves the exact same purpose as a "P" trap but a "P" trap is at 90" degree angles. I_i------ A "S" trap continues on in a straight line after the trap. Can't draw that one. Like a Dollar sign with really long lines. OK picture this ::::

P comes out of the bottom of sink and turns 90 degrees into the wall

S comes out of the sink bottom makes a double curve and continues on into the floor (straight line)
1 1/4 inch s-traps in PVC should be under 5 us bucks each at any hardware store. If you go into a plumbing supply house, explain what you are doing for the school I bet you'll get them at wholesale!!! Hope I haven't confused you into outer space and this helps either way you are looking for a "S" or a "P" no pun intended!!! Hope this helped

Added:
A P trap would be like a divers snorkle from your mouth running up the right side of your face but at your ear it would turn away from your face!!going right!!! Oh heck now I'm confused ...how about about pvc pipe and 2 90degree elbows in the shape of a big U kind of a square U that is!!

I think what you have is just the bottom portion of a trap. That part is the same in a P or S trap. You can approximate the piece with a 1½ in 90°elbow and a 1½ in 90° street elbow. The're available at any home center. They may fit tight enough that glue may not be necessary. But check to be sure.

I've never had any success with the liquid drain cleaners in 60 years of trying. I still rely on a piece of wire with a hook on the end. Soft stranded copper about about 10 ga and 2 feet long is the best I've found. It is flexible enough to go around a slight bend and stiff enough to pull out the junk. Search in answers for shower drains about how it is used. If that does not work, then I'd try the other solutions. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves no matter what. Good luck.

as a music teacher you should nknow the materials of instrument will affect there tone and pitch if you are trying for the greatest clarity go with brass although it is costly you will get the best overall effect that you are seeking and with this just make a c-shape simiar to a telephone with a flare on both ends
also you may be able to find someone willing to donate the materials ask around and good luck

This site may have what you are looking for. http://plumbing.hardwarestore.com/52-333-pvc-traps.aspx

Home depot, Lowes, and hardware stores have a very limited supply of fittings. Check your yellow pages for a plumbing wholesale company in your area and they most likely will have anything you need.
