I grew up in the city, went to high school on the coast and now live in a country town,(pop:130000). My husband grew up in a smaller town just 30 mins away with a pop:6000. All of his family,(aunts,uncles,e.t.c..), grew up in cities Brisbane, Sydney, Gold Coast, London, e.t.c... They all have lower opinions about education, employment, and lifestyle oppurtunities in the country. I have noticed this seems to be a common opinion of alot of old friends of ours too who now live in the larger cities. In my experience all places have the same variety of people everywhere. Funny thing is my sisters high school was ranked 1 in QLD for O.P. scores and there are only 600 students in her school. Also most of our friends earn more money in agricultural jobs than those in office jobs in the city. So why do they have such a poor opinion on country people?

I can't imagine! I grew up in the country, and spend many weekends, every summer, and every holiday watching city people drive for hours to get to the country.
If you get on the interstates on Friday night, you'll see long lines of city people headed for the country. When they get to the country, they pay twice as much for real estate as it's worth. If a piece of property goes up for sale in the area, and it's wildly over-priced, you'll hear locals comment that only a city person would be crazy enough to pay that much...and if the seller holds out long enough, he just might get a taker.
We've always wondered why they looked down on us....we are smart enough to stay somewhere that they have to pay good money, and drive for hours to get to! One of the best parts is that we use their money to support our economy! They spend all of their hard-earned city dollars in our restaurants, hotels, grocery stores and gas stations, and they buy summer camps here, and contribute to our local tax base!
In the end, I think you and I already know who the smarter people are! We're smart enough to stay where they long to be...they're working 70 hours a week to earn enough money to drive here.....

There are certainly lots of opportunities in the city...but if it so great, how come they are all dying to get out of the city??

I think it just has to do with being very naive.
I live in Omaha which has close to 2million people in it, but is still considered to be a small city in the country.
Some people from L.A still think we are living like cowboys out here in Omaha.
I believe they just get into a little personal bubble and in their little world things are just how they imagine them.
I used to work for a world wide hotel chain, doing reservations here in Omaha, and had several people shocked that we had computers here in Nebraska, and surprised we didn't all listen to country bumpkin music.
Hmmmmm....interesting. I think they just are incredibly sheltered and/or ignorant and really should get out of their bubble more and see the rest of the country.

I think you have it turned around. All the Farmers, that I know , seem to look down on the City Folks. Keep saying the City Folks would starve to death if it wasn't for the Farmer. They think the City Folks, are rude, wild and don't even know how to milk a cow. Country Folks say, they would never live in the City.

Wow; don't typecast!
I love Country people. I live in the City, & find city people stuffy & too fast-paced.
Country folk are friendly; down to earth; hard-working people.

Perhaps they didn't bother to find out the truth before forming an opinion .
