Most shelters harbor women and children, although they turn away older male children (the cut-off varies; sometimes it's as low as 12) because they could create a "hostile environment." Men and their children are almost always turned away.

No if the kids are being abused as well as the mom or just the kids were abuse. It varies from each women's shelter but the rules are same you usually have to have kids to stay in one ! Some are only for single women with out children with who were being abuse ! It gives them a safe place to stay until they can get on their feet. Most provide counseling so they will not be in that situation!

You married an abusive guy, yet do no longer think of he's as undesirable. Abuse is abuse. It depends on the agency's mandate. Some are exclusively shelters for abused women, and some... the transition houses.. will take in any woman who needs shelter. Homeless, leaving abusive relationships, transient... whatever. Not a pleasant place to stay, believe me.
Take a look in your phonebook and call your closest crisis line to get some info about the shelters close to you.

To be able to stay at a women's shelter a woman only has to "claim" that she is being abused or that there is a threat of abuse.
Basically that means any woman can stay there. The fact that a woman stayed at one of these shelters is often used as proof that she was abused in the family court or in a prosecution against her partner.
Of course, even in the event that a man's wife attacks him with a knife every time she gets upset, he will be turned away. Despite this statistics on men and women using these shelters is held up by feminists as proof men commit more domestic violence.

HI I have Volunteered in a few Different womens shelters. They usually take domestic violence, homeless women. Some take women and their chldren. Womens shelters are also for women trying to get away from a abusive relationships like marraged or boyfriend etc. Give them a call and ask what their criteria is and tell them your situation. If they can't take you in they usually refer you someplace else. I wish you them best of luck. Stay safe. Whatever, your situation for wanting a shelter I know you must be afraid. Shelters are a safe haven. God Bless.

Womens shelters are designed to allow women a safe place to escape abuse regardless of who is doing the abusing. I don't think that it would let you in just to get out of a situation whereby your spouse/bf is cheating on you. There are programs out there that would help to support you and your children if you are without income and shelter. Hope that helps.

we accept women who are being abused by an intimate partner/and or family member.or others.we at times take in those who are homeless, because if you ask enough questions on intake, most often there are abuse issues there.we have a 24 hour assessment period,if other arrangements need to take place we can assist with most.In the case of severe mental health issues even if abused they must first seek medical aid.If unwilling ,then unfortunately those are the ones who will fall in the cracks of society. Our criteria is first and foremost abuse issues. There are other shelters that can assist in those that are not.We all work together in our province ie referralls.transportation needs if available. We asscess each one on an individual basis to see what we can do.Each house is autonamous and we do some things that others will absolutely not do...so it depends on her needs....... single women as well.. anyone of legal age [women only]......except if she has male child or even some young male teen is welcome on a case by case situation..

All depends on the funding & aims of the organisation funding the shelter &/or the attitude of the stuff running it.
I know there are ones for all kind of situations. Including homeless women.

No, they are not just for spousal abuse. Many drug abusers or former drug abusers live in the one in my home town. Anyone ho is trying to get straightened out and get back on their feet can live in one as long as they follow the house rules. They have a kerphew they have to live with and as soon as they get a job, they have to pay rent by the week. I know a girl who couldn't get along with her parents and lived in our towns shelter for 4 years while she was going to school and prep for medical school. the shelter helped her get a full scholarship at a university. YEH!

Usually yes, but if you need to get into one.. just say you are scared of a boyfriend after you... Sometimes if someone gets out of rehab.. they stay there untilthey find somewhere,... The WMCA is more for abused women
