So I wanted to get an industrial piercing/ its a bar insreted through two piercings. My hair hangs down by my ears will this effect any thing? Also if I take care of it, and clean it well, will that reduce my chances of infection and keloids? Also, how long will I have to wait before I can sleep on that ear, I might accidentaly roll over on it. I also wanted to get a 16 gague because its smaller, is it harder to find 16 gague barbells. If any one has any cartilge piercings, how long did it take for it to heal. Also, if someday I dont like it, will the holes ever close up, I heard they dont, but could a doctor colse them. Are the holes really big and visible?

i had mine done twice. i removed the 1st one after a year because i decided i wanted it in my other ear. don't worry, the holes definitely close up, lol, & pretty fast, too. however, that part of cartilage that was punched through will never heal back with the same hardness. you will always feel an "indentation" where the hole was, but it isn't visible. the only problem i've had with my hair was the sideburn chunk of it getting tangled around the top ball of the barbell, so i cut it, but it isn't noticible at all. whether u get the 16g or the 14g is up to you. i think they both look cute. but if it's only because you think the 14 will hurt more, it's really not that bad at all, like a pinch. it takes about 2 to 3 months to heal, the 1st 2 weeks being the most important in the process. make sure you do the sea salt soaks at least once a day bc it will make the healing faster, kill bacteria & prevent keloids. cartilage doesn't get that much blood, which is necessary for the healing process, & the hot water really helps get it to your ear. other than that, try to not disturb it. don't clean it too much or play with it. it's been 2 months since i got it done & it's almost fully healed, & i still try to sleep on the other side bc i don't want to irritate it. i mean, if you accidently do, it's not, like, a huge deal or anything. i would also suggest getting some 100% tea tree oil and put that on it once in a while to prevent keloids, & if you do think you are getting one, definitely start putting on the tee trea oil asap to make it go away.

Ok I got an industrial piercing on 9/30/06. I love it. I have really long hair and like to tuck it behind my ears and I've had no problems. However you have to be careful, if you snag the piercing with your hair it will hurt. If you clean it 2 times a day with antibacterial soap and sea salt soaks you should not get an infection. Just remember to never touch it with your hands unless you've just washed them real good. I'm not sure how keloids form but sea salt should reduce the chance of getting one. As of today I still cant sleep on my ear without forming pillows around it or cupping my hand so nothing is touching it. So my industrial isnt completely healed yet but it is getting closer to being so after 3 months. I got a 14 guage barbell and I know 16 guage are harder to find but if you ever decide to take it out that would be quicker to heal. Yes they close up. A few of my friends have had industrials that got infected and decided to take them out and I cant even tell where the holes used to be. Though sometimes they might heal with a little bump on them. And I'm pretty sure the holes arent too visible unless someones starring at your ear. And with some hair it can be easily covered. Another reason I love my industrial with my long hair I can choose to cover it or show it off when I want to.

I have mine done. The only thing dealing with hair is sometimes it slips between your ear and the barbel. Just gently pull it out if your hair does it at first.
And I slept on mine right after I got it done. It'll take around a month to heal if you take constant care of it.
As for a 16 gg, you're probably not going to find a barbel that easily. I got mine at a 12. Just stick with that because that's standard for the length you're going to need. It won't hurt anymore than a 16.
The holes will mend shut. You really only need surgery when you stretch lower numbers for the cartilage. I know its around a 2 for soft tissue so I'm guessing an 8 for cartilage. So don't be worried.

It costed $10 in finished for the two however the commercial is approximately $60 and you get this vast bump or pimple factor that has to pop while its therapeutic.
