WELL DUE TO A LACK OF INFORMATION I WILL SAY YES YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THE TRANNY.I AM IMAGINING YOU HAVE A 8 CYLINDER,OR IS IT A 6?IF YOUR GOING TO BOTHER TO PUT IN AN LS1(WHICH I RECCOMEND)THEN PULL THE TRANNY AND BUILD IT.IF IT'S A CRAPPY TRANNY THEN PUT IN A RACE READY ONE FROM SUMMIT.

LS1 is by far the better motor. The tranny will most likely fit and work, however it will not be strong enough to handle what I suspect you want to use this for!! Swap out the trans. or get it rebuilt for the hard going to come.

you may want to change the tranny bc the other engines are more powerful. If money is not object go for the LS7.
LS1=330-350HP
LS2=400HP
LS6=405HP
LS7=505HP
Dont forget about the rear end either, that stock one wont handle as much torque depending what you do.
