I've got a 54-year-old dishwasher - and it's called JelliclePat. I've always done my dishes by hand. As someone already pointed out, dishwashers don't always do a thorough job; a human can feel if there's any grease or other stuff still sticking to a plate or pan. If you do dishes by hand, you're not using extra electricity. If you fill your sink (instead of letting the water run) and do the dishes in a logical order (glassware, utensils, plates, pots and pans), there's no reason why you should be using more water than a dishwasher. The glassware needs the least cleaning, eating utensils a little more, plates and cooking utensils still more, and greasy cook-pots need the most. If you do the pots last, there's no way cooking grease can adhere to the glassware, thus eliminating extra cleaning. That's the way our family has done it for several generations, and it seems to work...

I think you should do them by hand out of pity for me since I have no dishwasher.
