You choose what party you want to be part of or not when you register to vote. I myself am unaffiliated because I don't agree with either party 100% and don't let others decide for me on how I feel on the issues.

In general, Democrats are more liberal in that they favor progressive change in society, freedoms from government intervention into one’s private and social life, and regulations on economic activity and businesses. In general, Republicans are more conservative in that they favor traditional institutions and the status quo, restrictions on private and social activities, and freedoms from government controls over economic activity and businesses. Yet, not all Democrats are liberal and all Republicans conservative. For instance, people – or both parties and political ideologies – in the American South tend to be more conservative, while their neighbors in the Northeast and West Coast are typically more liberal. Also, not everyone adheres to the principles of the two major parties and there are several minor or “third parties” in the United States, although they rarely get their candidates elected.
Nonetheless, there are some noticeable differences in the political parties. In brief, Democrats tend to favor an active role for government in society and believe that such involvement – be it environmental regulations against polluting or anti-discrimination laws – can improve the quality of our lives and help achieve the larger goals of opportunity and equality. On the other hand, Republicans tend to favor a limited role for government in society and believe that such reliance on the private sector (businesses and individuals) – be it avoiding unnecessary environmental regulations or heavy-handed anti-discrimination laws – can improve economic productivity and help achieve the larger goals of freedom and self-reliance

You need to read the news and follow the people who make the difference in your area; state representatives, governors, congressional house and senate representatives. Educate yourself on the issues and then see how those people act for or against each issue. You will probably need to weigh which issues are the most important to you as well. Whichever politician you agree with more, is the one who represents your idea and beliefs, and their party is the one you most likely fit into more. Here is a great site to learn how your representatives have voted in Congress, there is also a test to see who you most likely agree with: http://www.ontheissues.org/default.htm

If you believe that all the money you make belongs to the government and that you should be thankful they let you keep a little, instead of taking it all, then you are a Democrat.
If you believe that all the money you make belongs to you, and that the government should be thankful you let them take some of it without voting them out of power, then you are a Republican.

A VERY oversimplified way to understand if you are a Dem or Rep is
If you are a leftist or liberal, you are most likely a Dem
if you are a conservative or on the right, you are most likely a Rep

I was raised by Republican parents but then I took matters to myself and decided to become a moderate Democrat.
Why? Personal experience.

From a purely financial standpoint ....anyone who makes under a $100,000 a year.... and votes Republican, is in fact politically retarded...because they vote against their own self interests.
From a purely Environmental standpoint anyone who votes Republican has chosen the corporate polluters over a sustainable earth.
I could go on and on....but I hope you see a picture emerging.
