The premise of a pedophilia is generally stemmed from a familial background of depression and dysfunction, most often pedophiles are abused as children themselves, research has shown that its not the act of sex in which they are interested, but instead an authoritative dominance they feel when with a child. In a way, these people are acting out similar instances of their own childhoods, but this time they have control, this power role acts as an emotional outlet for repressed feelings. In some studies activity in the frontal lobes is less in pedophiles, then those of normal individuals, the frontal lobes are generally responsible for executive functioning, or decision making. This idea sheds light on the idea of a physiological and environmental basis to this "disorder".

It is a socially constructed term - not so long ago, sex with children was entirely normal and acceptable, legally, morally and otherwise. I am not saying that I think it is ok to abuse children, but I do think that people are often wrongly labelled as paedophiles; take the case of a 14 year old girl and a 21 year old man - even if they are deeply in love and sex is consensual, he may still be labelled a paedophile. This happens because the law covers the issue with a blanket, rather than taking each case on its individual merits. Paedophilia only exists because it has been decided to put a legal age of consent on sexual relationships. I think it is important to recognise the difference between sexual abuse and consenting relationships.

There is not, in Great Britain anyway, a law against "paedophilia" (UK spelling ~ pedo- in the US). What is illegal is sex ACTS between an adult and a minor - a criminal offence. For this purpose a "minor" is someone under 16 if the act is heterosexual and under 18 if it is homosexual..... that difference is one illustration of the blunderbuss nature of the law.

The word "paedophilia" is in psychological use and of course in the newspapers too. It basically describes a behaviour -- looking for children with a view to enticing them into sex acts or developing a relationship with a child(ren) with sexual motivation is psychologically paedophile behaviour as well as actual sexual activity. The word implies desire and intention behind the behaviour along with the activity itself.

I would never use the phrase "mental deficiency", but of course paedophile behaviour is socially unacceptable because of the harm to the children who take part. (Harm usually results even when they consent to or initiate the behaviour.)

I have a hard time thinking it's a mental deficiency, insinuating that people can help themselves, or that it's some sort of chromosome induced occurance. I could believe it's a learned behavior of some sort, maybe abuse or exposure to smut in early childhood by someone the child feared or respected. However, when one become of an age of accountability, that is a sorry excuse. Is it a crime? You bet- and a reportable one.

It is a crime. We all have a certain mental deficiency in our own merit but not all of us goes around on a rampage to satisfy our demons. As soon as anyone robs a person of their liberty, that is a crime and at the same time the perpetrator had just waive their own rights to humanity.

People who were abused as children go on to become paedophilles, so you might just call it mental defiency because we only learn in life what we are taught, thats why its so important to respect everybody the same. Not all abused children become paedophilles because they have learned that it is not acceptable in our society and therefore don't do it. Others who come from very dysfunctional families and who have been ostracized by society do become paedophilles. We all have a part to play.

It's a crime because society deems it to be one. I'd say it was a severe problem with the brains ability to differentiate between right and wrong ! A broken connection in the persons brain !
Freaks ! Hang em !

It's illegal, although as the age of consent differs from country to country and even state to state, it can be a crime in one place and not in another. So it's not MUCH of a crime, as murder or theft (for example) seem to be illegal everywhere.

I doubt it is always a mental deficiency, but maybe I need my frontal lobes checked.

I'd say it falls under both headings. It's certainly a crime, and it's caused by some kind of mental issue.

I highly doubt that they just go, "I want to break the law... Oh I know, how about raping children!" It probably is not something they have control over, and please understand I am not defending them, but it's probably just like people can't help whether they are heterosexual or homosexual (or bi or metro or whatever you want to call yourselves.) They probably can't help their attraction to kids. However, they ALL have enough power to stop themselves ever going near a child. When they do that, it is a crime.
